Lenkadu performances are immersive musical and visual worlds. Her music combines influences of electronic music, avant-garde sound art and various genres of live music, such as progressive metal and noise rock. She creates her beats, samples her field recordings, sings and plays multiple instruments such as kalimba, guitar, bass guitar and anything else that makes intriguing sounds.

Lenkadu plays video as one of the instruments in her musical and visual textures. Building on her experiences as a touring VJ, she mixes visuals live, creating a collage of her own and pirated imagery. Image and sound are closely interwoven in Lenkadu compositions.

Lenkadu is working on a 2011 album and DVD “Redshift” , a conceptual album about an imaginary tribe. It is a musical and visual journey with different tribe members to the darkest and lightest of our experiences.

Video Documentation

Adaptation is a performance by Lenka Chludová focusing on the interaction between our actions and the environment. Each action is at first meaningful for our survival (cover, water, food, warmth, shelter) but overdone to the extent where we struggle to survive the consequences of what we began to do in order to survive in the first place. This is "Misplaced Survival". The environment in this performance piece is manifested primarily in the sounds in the space. The materials and the order of the five actions were decided according to the their sonic properties and amplified in a way that these sounds begin to feedback on themselves as each action escalates. The feedback grows throughout the performance to the point of unbearable, forcing the performer to adapt to the environment and change the course of action, go back in pursuing these tasks, in an attempt to calm down the environment and to return, now transformed, to the original state. The audience too, despite being equipped with ear plugs, is exposed to the increasingly damaging sonic environment.

The sky could be the earth and the earth could be the sky. In Czech, Nebe is the sky and Země the earth, but written together it means 'not without me'. This video piece is a space for our imagination, without which the earth could not be the sky and the sky the earth. In NebeZemě imagination gains power from our ability to constantly reconfigure our spatial understanding of ourselves in the environment.

this piece is a question:

How long do we think we can maintain our humanness in this rushed and anxious contemporary world?

The aim of the action is to burn as many matches as fast as possible without burning myself. I take as deep breath as possible, clip my nose shut with a clothes pin and take as much water into my mouth as I fit. I can put out each match only by spitting water on it.
Only in the instance of spitting water can i breathe in again before i clip my nose shut again. Since this is only a short moment i manage to take in only little air and am gradually deprived of oxygen.
At the same time i have less and less water for each consecutive match, until finally i have no water to put out the match with and it burns me.
The sound of the match is amplified through a microphone hidden in the match box and played back with a delay over it.

Artist statement

"As fast and for as long as possible" is a response to an apparent imperative which seems to characterize our lives in contemporary society. The act is carried on all fours for two reasons. The impetus for it comes from an animalistic sense of an ever potential failure a person living under such imperative may have: "I might not be able to go on, I am just going to drop here and lay here still, then crawl or walk on all fours". The motion on all fours is also a cumbersome movement for the human body and in that is a parallel to the obstructed character a human life has under the imperative "as fast and as long as possible".

It is particular to the movement on all fours that it is straining from the beginning of the act and therefore does not go through a physically and visually obvious progression as, for example, running on two as fast and for as long as possible. The muscles and skeleton resist this abnormal motion in a way that makes the human body give out signals as if it is on the verge of collapsing three minutes into the act the same way it signals fifty minutes later. The sense of a pending total exhaustion therefore occurs repeatedly. This repetition opens a door to questioning our fulfillment of the detrimental imperative 'as fast and for as long possible'. It also offers a chance to witness the human determination to overcome the fear of total exhaustion and to feel confident in the face of such fear.

I made this pinecone dress based on an image of a pinecone creature i had while walking in a forest on Elba, Italy in the summer of 2007. I did not know what this creature was about until i spent months making this dress, when it occurred to me that she is about taking time and living in a slow pace.
When I performed in the dress in Portsmouth I therefore tried to make the pinecone creature live in a slow manner and to activate a parallel reality for the visitors where things happen very slowly. I slowly moved from the inside to the outside of the gallery space, gradually bringing out a few loose pinecones that were on the floor of the gallery space.
The clicking sounds in the background are sounds of pinecones popping i recorded when they were 'ageing', that is drying out in my studio in Boston.

These pinecones are from Cape Cod.
I would not be able to make this piece without the help of Katrine Burkitt and Noah Stout and without the support of Carl Ahlstrom and Pete Froslie.

Artist Statement

This piece developed from a single image I envisioned: a person with a suitcase walks into a wide open landscape, puts it down, sits on it still for as long as it feels right, stands up and walks out into the land. I knew that this happened in many locations. More I did not know exactly, but I was compelled to make the image.
The first moment I placed the camera, I realized the image was not about the person, but about the landscape and the person within the landscape. They were both equally important. I wanted to take the viewer into a place through the person, but the moment she sits down the viewer's attention is directed into the landscape, allowing the viewer to contemplate it along with the performer. The moment she stands up to lift the suitcase, the viewer's look is pulled back towards the person again. It follows her figure as she walks on out into the land and progressively refocuses onto the traveler's unison with the land.

This video consists of acts at five different locations. Each location is posted here as a separate video piece.

Artist Statement:

Přešlapování na místě is a Czech expression for the indecision when stepping from one foot to another for too long. This piece is about coming to the ocean tormented by decisions to be made and finding a resolution in the voice of the ocean.
It starts as a mere sound piece, with footsteps indicating the presence of a person on the beach, close sounds of the sea water among beach rocks and long vocal calling. These are layered into a rich dynamic texture that makes it possible to sense the ocean without having to see it. At around two minutes, the sound cuts out to leave the viewer in silence with the image of a stormy ocean, this time allowing her or him to hear the ocean without having to be given a sound. When the image zooms the closest into the water, the sound comes in with a wave and we are enveloped in the images and sounds of a stormy ocean. The vocal calling from the first part of the piece reemerges, yet this time as if from within the ocean waters. Embraced by the element, the decisions on the shore may now be less tormenting.

This piece was composed in reaction to the 1972 album Three Friends of the British band Gentle Giant, which is a concept album about three childhood friends whose life paths take them to separate places.
The concept for my 'Three Friends' is thinking about the different friends inside of me, they each have a different melody, which keeps separate, but mingle together in some sort of a unison. As this was to be presented at an event with artworks under one minute, i took the challenge to introduce and unite the three friends within one minute.

Misplaced Survival Series Artist Statement

Misplaced Survival is a series of performative and interactive artworks in which live actions trigger and respond to a technology embedded environment. It activates spaces where we may rediscover our primal self, and equipped by this centered sense, make choices within our contemporary life.

The artworks explore our primal self not as a romanticized original pre-technological entity, but as self bound and informed by its physicality and driven towards its spirituality. The explorations bring forth our ambiguity. While experienced as particular to each of us, our bodies consist of the same elements and processes as the rest of nature. The sounds of air and water within us are no different from the sounds of these elements in the environment from primordial to technological time. While vulnerable we are designed to endure. The instincts to lick our blood or refrain from harmfully loud actions guide us even when we are not consciously clear on how to act. And while the primal self is reliable, we can ignore it, such as when the determination to keep moving as fast and for as long as possible can silence alerting signs of the body in abnormal conditions.

Our primal self is constantly being tested and redirected by the pressures and currents of our contemporary life conditions. The anxieties we feel in the face of constant change make us susceptible to accept established strategies that supposedly assure safety from discomforting change. We put ourselves under such pressures to participate in these strategies that much of what we have to do now is merely trying to survive the consequences of what we began to do in order to survive in the first place. This is a misplaced survival. As the primal selves, we know that there is more to a human life than moving as fast and for as long as possible, because at the end of that move are no fanfares of victory, merely a collapse.

The situations of the Misplaced Survival series face us with the same choices as the contemporary condition, but in a language that bonds the primal self with the technological contemporary condition. In live events technology is used to construct a logic for sonic and visual space so that we are related to the environment by feedback, the basis of intelligence. In interactive installations we can influence what video and sound fill the space and react to the results created. In these experiences of feedback relationship to the environment, multiple layers of our primal self, that is the intellectual, emotional, bodily and subconscious layers, are addressed and activated to fuel a decisive intelligence, which in turn may be the source of developing an alternative to our current condition of misplaced survival.
